This part of Normandy is not well known by UK golfers. This is a shame because there are many excellent courses waiting to be discovered. Aside from Coutainville golf club on your doorstep, there is Granville golf club which is a hugely challenging links course. A real demon when the wind blows (as it usually does). The green fee is good for the day so arrive early, get a buggy and you can fit in 36 holes – with an excellent lunch in the restaurant.
Vire golf club is an oasis of calm and usually empty. The opening six holes will frighten anyone but the straight hitter and there are some startling gradients. A buggy is recommended but the views and tranquillity make it well worth the journey.
The golf d’Omaha Beach probably needs no introduction and has recently opened the new Manoir course along side the old Mer and Bocage courses. Be prepared for speedy greens.
The golf de St Malo at Le Tronchet is generally wide, open and forgiving. A pleasure to play but often crowded at peak times.
The golf des Ormes is narrow and tree lined. The opposite of the golf de St Malo. Recommended by many, I cannot comment having not played there since a very muddy autumn round 20 years ago.
For views the Golf de Dinard is unbeatable. Absolutely stunning scenery on the Brittany seaside. But a €90 green fee in summer coupled with the course which in itself is average with a number of questionable holes, it comes lower down my list of recommendations.
If you are thinking of playing a number of courses it might be well worth your while to buy a carte golfy or a Passe Golf Normandy, available at Granville or Omaha, €148 (2013 rate) for three different courses, valid for 12 months.
